xarelto-lawsuit-side-effects-lawyerFilings of Xarelto bleeding lawsuits continue with more than 19,500 complaints pending in state and federal courts. The Xarelto lawsuits all allege that taking the blood thinner places patients at risk for brain bleeds, internal bleeding, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, blood clots and other life-threatening side effects that require hospitalization or transfusion, and even cause death.

Xarelto lawsuits accuse Bayer HealthCare, and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., which makes and markets the blood thinner, of failing to adequately warn that Xarelto does not have an antidote to reverse the medication’s anti-clotting effects.

“When we speak with men and women about Xarelto, they continue to tell us about the dangerous adverse bleeding events that they experienced after they started using the blood thinner,” says Dr. François Blaudeau, founder of Southern Med Law.

Xarelto bleeding lawsuits filed in federal courts have been centralized in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana. The federal Xarelto lawsuits increased from 17,593 to 19,523 from July 17 to August 15, according to statistics from the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. A mass tort was established in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas for state court Xarelto lawsuits. Currently, 1,497 complaints are listed in the mass tort in Pennsylvania. Both the federal and state complaints allege the defendants failed to adequately warn about the anticoagulant’s safety risks. Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent strokes, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem. Xarelto, along with Eliquis and Pradaxa, are new generation blood thinners compared to warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), which had been the only FDA-approved blood thinner to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation since 1954. The newer blood thinners are promoted as being more convenient to use than warfarin because patients do not have to undergo periodic blood tests as do patients who take warfarin. However, the FDA cautions that Xarelto and Eliquis do not have an antidote to reverse their anti-clotting effects. Vitamin K is used to reverse the anticoagulation effects of warfarin. Praxbind is used to reverse Pradaxa’s anti-clotting effects.

The Xarelto bleeding lawsuits maintain that the lack of an antidote to reverse Xarelto’s anti-clotting effect could have permanently disabling, life-threatening and fatal consequences. In one recently filed Xarelto bleeding side-effect lawsuit, a New York man said he began taking Xarelto in June 2013 and two months later, he started coughing up blood. He stopped using the blood thinner in September 2013. The man contends that he suffered a life-threatening bleeding event due to Xarelto as well as other severe and permanent injuries.
