The Viagra skin cancer attorneys at Southern Med Law created this page in response to the growing litigation involving the popular erectile dysfunction medication. The Firm’s new page is intended to provide alleged victims of Viagra-related skin cancer with important information about their legal rights.

Viagra (sildenafil) is a prescription medication marketed by Pfizer, Inc. that is prescribed to treat sexual dysfunction, including impotence, in men. Since its introduction in 1998, Viagra has been prescribed to millions of patients, and is considered by most consumers to be an extremely safe medication. However, a growing body of research has indicated that the use of Viagra may be associated with an increased risk of melanoma, a life-threatening form of skin cancer.

One of these studies published in JAMA Internal Medicine in April 2014, and suggested that recent use of Viagra was “significantly associated” with a higher risk for the disease. The study involved data on more than 25,000 patients who were followed for a decade. According to the analysis, patients who took Viagra were 84% more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma compared to men who were not exposed to the drug.

A second study that appeared in the journal Cell Reports this past March found evidence that Viagra works in a way that could accelerate the growth and spread of melanoma at the cellular level. The drug alleviates impotence by blocking a certain enzyme that controls blood vessel. However the same enzyme also blocks production of another molecule that appears to encourage the growth of skin tumors. Thus, inhibition of this enzyme by Viagra could inadvertently cause melanoma to grow more rapidly, according to the paper.[medicalnewstoday.com/articles/307729.php, Medical News Toda, 2016]

On March 31st, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) heard Oral Arguments regarding a proposal to centralize all federally-filed Viagra skin cancer claims in a single federal court for the purposes of coordinated pretrial proceedings. Court documents indicate that there are currently several dozen such lawsuits pending in federal courts around the country. However, plaintiffs seeking the consolidation of Viagra melanoma lawsuit s assert that many more cases could be filed in the future. They have argued that centralization will help prevent duplicative discovery into common issues, avoid conflicting pretrial rulings from different courts, and serve the convenience of the parties, witnesses and the courts. (In Re: Viagra Products Liability Litigation – MDL No. 2691)
Pfizer also supports centralization of federal Viagra lawsuits, and has suggested that the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, would be an appropriate venue for the proceeding.
