Nursing Home Malpractice
Nursing homes are part of a multibillion-dollar industry mostly made up of major corporations. In many so-called “skilled nursing facilities”, profitability is far more important than patient safety. Indeed, the New York Times has reported that 90% of all skilled nursing facilities have been cited for violating federal health and safety standards.
Nursing homes must provide reasonable care to residents. If an employee provides unreasonable care, or even worse, abuses the resident, the resident or the family may bring a lawsuit against the nursing home to recover money damages. Compensation includes reimbursement for physical pain and suffering, medical debt, and the loss of enjoyment of life. There are also state and federal laws and regulations that provide additional protections to nursing home patients.
In any situation where a patient of a nursing home is injured, the patient should seek legal advice. It is difficult to obtain just compensation without the help of an attorney.
