As Southern Med Law has received inquired for information surrounding Mirena IUDs, the firm has launched a webpage to provide up-to-date information on Mirena Pregnancy and Birth Defects Lawsuits, as well as other health and issues surrounding the popular birth control device. Dr. Francois Blaudeau, a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist and attorney has been a strong advocate for women’s health issues. The firm is concerned more women using the Mirena IUD could become pregnant. A pregnancy while using Mirena can be a serious danger to the developing fetus, especially if the IUD is not removed early on in the pregnancy. Becoming pregnant while using Mirena can also lead to ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, premature birth, and even birth defects and fetal abnormalities. There are currently 3,300 Mirena lawsuits pending litgation alleging complications from the IUD device (Case No. 02-CV-2014-902242.00, Mobile County Circuit Court)
As stated in Mirena pregnancy birth defects lawsuits, Mirena is a long-acting birth control device that releases levonorgestral, a synthetic form of progestin, directly into the uterus for up to five years. According to court documents, Mirena, manufacturered by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, is an effective contraceptive, yet women can become pregnant causing risks of birth defects to their unborn fetus and other complications including an ectopic pregnancy.
“We are involved in Mirena IUD lawsuits and have spoken to women who have experienced complications due to this birth control device. We encourage women who have been harmed by Mirena to discuss their injuries as they may have a valid legal claim against Bayer Healthcare.” – Southern Med Law
Mirena IUD Lawsuits
Court documents indicate that more than 3,300 Mirena lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court and the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York where the birth control complaints have been consolidated for pretrial proceedings. The state and federal lawsuits have been filed on behalf of women who suffered complications from a Mirena IUD implant that includes uterine perforations, ectopic pregnancies, organ damage, scaring and adhesions, and infertility due to the effects of the birth control device. The Mirena IUD complaints purport that the intrauterine device is “defective and unreasonably dangerous” and Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals downplayed the risk of its birth control device. (In Re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434) (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297) Court documents in the New Jersey state court indicate that parties in the Mirena IUD cases are in the process of selecting 14 cases for the second bellwether trial in the proceeding. According to court records, the selections must be submitted by July 2 and the trial is scheduled to begin in late 2016. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297)
