As both an attorney and practicing gynecologist, Dr. François Blaudeau provides his perspective on Mirena IUD Side Effects and the growing Mirena litigation over uterine perforations and other serious purported Birth Control Complications.
Southern Med Law announces the launch of a new Mirena IUD side effects page in response to the growing litigation involving the birth control device. As both a practicing gynecologist and attorney, Dr. François Blaudeau, the founder of Southern Med Law, possesses a unique understanding of the medical and legal questions relating to Mirena lawsuits filed on behalf of women who sustained uterine perforations and other serious side effects allegedly associated with the contraceptive implant.
“Many women use the Mirena IUD because they were promised a convenient method of long-acting contraception. But our own experience with Mirena lawsuit clients, along with the thousands of claims pending in state and federal courts, suggests that the IUD often falls short of those promises, and has allegedly left some women with painful and debilitating injuries,” says Dr. François Blaudeau. “Whether or not Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals adequately warned of these alleged risks is one of the key questions in the Mirena litigation.”
Dr. Blaudeau and Southern Med Law are currently representing an Alabama family in a Mirena IUD lawsuit, following their baby’s premature birth and subsequent death in 2012. The complaint, which is currently pending in Alabama’s Mobile County Circuit Court, alleges that the IUD failed to prevent pregnancy due to problems locating its strings, which also made the device difficult to remove. The inability to remove the Mirena IUD from her uterus allegedly caused the baby’s mother to develop an intra-uterine infection that led to the child’s death following a premature rupture of membranes, chorioamnionitis and preterm delivery before his lungs were fully developed. (Case No. 02-CV-2014-902242.00)
According to court documents, more than 1,200 additional Mirena lawsuits are currently pending in a federal litigation underway in the U.S. District Court Southern District of New York, all of which were filed on behalf of women who allegedly experienced serious Mirena IUD complications when the IUD spontaneously migrated from its proper position in the uterus. (Re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434) Nearly 1,800 similar Mirena IUD lawsuits involving alleged spontaneous migration have been consolidated in a multicounty litigation underway in New Jersey Superior Court. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297)
Court records indicate that all of the plaintiffs involved in these lawsuits accuse Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals of failing to warn that the Mirena IUD could spontaneously migrate long after it was correctly implanted by a healthcare provide. They further allege that the spontaneous migration of the implant can result in numerous serious Mirena IUD side effects, including:
• Uterine Perforations
• Ectopic Pregnancy
• Organ Damage
