lipitor-lawsuits-soutern-med-lawThe federal litigation for Lipitor lawsuits currently underway in U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina, is growing at a steady rate, according to the attorneys at Southern Med Law. According to court records, 1,814 claims were pending in the litigation as of February 17, 2015. All of the lawsuits were filed on behalf of Lipitor patients who allege that use of the statin medication resulted in the development of Type 2 diabetes. “The Lipitor litigation was established last February, according to the Court’s Initial Transfer Order which originally sent 21 Lipitor diabetes claims to the litigation. These types of proceedings are established to coordinate discovery and other matters in a large number of lawsuits that involve similar factual allegations. Considering how the Lipitor litigation has grown in the past year, it’s clear that the multidistrict litigation for these cases was appropriate” says Southern Med Law.

According to the Firm, Lipitor and other statins have been linked to a number of serious complications, including muscle disorders, kidney problems and diabetes. In February 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the drugs’ manufacturers to add new warnings to their labels regarding potentially harmful effects on blood sugar levels that have the potential to lead to new-onset Type 2 diabetes. However, court records indicate that plaintiffs in Lipitor lawsuits allege that the information added to the drug’s label is still not sufficient to warn patients that they may face an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes.
