The Essure birth control device is a permanent birth control system originally manufactured by Conceptus Inc., which was acquired by Bayer in 2013. According to Bayer, Essure is 99 percent effective at permanently preventing pregnancy and is the only permanent birth control method with a non-surgical procedure. The small flexible device has metal coils that are inserted into each fallopian tube. In three months, a scar-tissue barrier forms around the inserts that prevents insemination. Bayer promotes Essure as a birth control chosen by 750,000 women and their doctors.
Essure received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002. Since its approval however, the FDA said it has received more than 9,900 adverse events reports about Essure, including pelvic pain, heavier periods, headache and fatigue. In February, the FDA ordered Bayer to place a black box warning on Essure’s label and directed Bayer to conduct new studies that assess Essure’s risk in different groups of women.

Essure lawsuits involving hysterectomies are being filed nationwide on behalf of women who had hysterectomies allegedly due to complications such as debilitating pain, heavy bleeding, migraines, device breakage, and allergic reaction to Essure’s metal coils. One lawsuit recently filed in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Tennessee stated the plaintiff, who had an Essure implant in 2006, had to have a hysterectomy due to Essure complications that included heavy menses, pelvic pain and joint pain. (Case No. 3:16-cv-00286) In another lawsuit, a plaintiff who had an Essure implant in 2013 had a total hysterectomy in January 2015 to “control the excruciating pain” allegedly caused by the Essure device. (Case No. 3:16-cv-00286)
