IVC Filter Lawsuits Allege IVC Filters Fracture, Tilt, Migrate, And Puncture The Inferior Vena Cava And Other Internal Organs.
After Southern Med Law recently filed an IVC lawsuit, the firm learned trough news reports, that radiologists at a Joliet, Illinois medical center are urging patients implanted with IVC filters to check with their doctors to determine if the filters need to be removed. Retrieving IVC filters after the threat of blood clots has passed could save lives, says radiologists at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center. Nationwide, some patients who have allegedly experiencing IVC filters migrating, fracturing and embedding in or near vital organs causing injury or complications are filing IVC filter lawsuits against the manufacturers of the medical devices.
“Studies have shown that IVC filters have high failure rates when left implanted on a long-term basis,” explains Southern Med Law’s founder, Dr. François Blaudeau, an attorney and a practicing physician who possesses a unique understanding of the medical and legal issues central to IVC filter lawsuits.
Southern Med Law has spoken to numerous men and women from across the country who believe they have suffered from IVC filter injuries and complications. The firm notes that in a recent interview, Noah Schwind, a radiologist at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, said some patients have come to the hospital “dangerously close” to having their long-implanted IVC filter become a serious issue. Some patients have had the IVC filters implanted for 10 years while others had the struts or “legs” on the filter fracture into or near the heart. IVC filters can also cause cardiac tamponade, a condition in which a build up of blood or fluid around the heart places extreme pressure on the heart, according to Schwind. IVC filter complications can also lead to cardiogenic shock which occurs when the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.
The push by medical professionals for patients to have IVC filters removed is due, in part, to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommending doctors to remove IVC filters between 29 and 54 days after implantation or after the threat of a pulmonary embolism has subsided. IVC filters are small, wire devices implanted into the inferior vena cava to catch blood clots and stop them from causing a pulmonary embolism. The FDA has received reports of IVC filters breaking, migrating, tilting, and perforating the heart and other organs. Complications can occur the longer an IVC filter remains implanted, according to the FDA.
Court documents indicate that IVC filter manufacturers, including C.R. Bard, Cook Medical Inc., and Cordis Corporation are named as defendants in IVC filter injury lawsuits. The lawsuits allege the manufacturers designed defective and dangerous IVC filters that are prone to fracture, migrate, tilt and fail to prevent blood clots that can cause death. (In Re: Bard IVC Filters Product Liability Litigation – MDL No. 2641) (In Re: Cook Medical, Inc., IVC Filter Lawsuits, MDL No. 2570) Southern Med Law is representing the family of an Alabama woman who had a Cordis TrapEase IVC filter implanted in 2009. According to the complaint, the woman began having complications allegedly due to the IVC filter and died of cardiac arrest in September 2014.
